The Swiss Travel System runs as smoothly as clockwork - each wheel engaging with the next in perfect harmony. The InterCity trains are for long-distance travelling and set the tone for everything else. Regional transport and Postbuses both operate in sync with the Inter-City trains. The ships plying the Swiss lakes and the smaller transport systems which lead up to the mountains are also cogs in the Swiss Travel system. Enjoy the sights from the panoramic windows of a train, a boat deck or one of the yellow Postbuses, and get to know Switzerland’s natural beauty in a spectacular manner.

All journeys on the Swiss Travel System are day journeys. 1st and 2nd class seated accommodation are offered on all trains. The price differential between 1st and 2nd class is around 50%. First class offers you more space and a quieter journey. Your seats are a bit more comfortable, and you are assigned the upper deck on the ships. There is, however, no distinction between 1st and 2nd class in the dining cars, on Postbuses, and on some regional trains.

If you choose second class, you always have the option of paying an extra charge for first class on a longer journey or on a panoramic route. This applies on long-distance trains and on ships, but not on regional trains.

Most trains, including the scenic trains in the Swiss Travel System have a dining car with food available for purchase. Look out for the knife and fork pictogram to know if the train has a dining car. The travelling restaurants may be found on the ICN and InterCity route networks, between Lucerne and Interlaken East, as well as on the international routes. Often a RailBar will come rolling right up to your seat. This is your chance to choose from a selection of sandwiches and drinks, or to even enjoy a real espresso from the mobile espresso machine.
